What’s Datamoshing
Datamoshing is a particularly interesting technique in the world of video editing. It combines data manipulation with visual art in a very distinctive way. Essentially, it involves intentionally altering certain frames or compression data between frames in a video file to create unique and striking visual effects. It’s an intrinsic process in which the defects of an image are deliberately incorporated as inherent elements of the piece itself. This approach is used both to generate artistic expressions and to produce culturally charged, reclaiming gestures.
The result is a kind of image blending that often differs greatly from what we’re used to seeing in traditional video editing. It can range from soft, dreamlike visual effects to more radical and chaotic distortion, which is precisely what makes it so intriguing.
